A mile of magical lights switched on in Cookstown in style by Kate Grant

25 November 2017

Record crowds braved a crisp and frosty evening on Friday past (24th) as Cookstown kicked off the Christmas Light Switch On celebrations in the Mid Ulster District Council area. Over two thousand people enjoyed the free family entertainment, ice sculptures, face painting and balloon modelling as well as a host of Christmas and Cartoon characters as they waited for Santa to arrive.

Local band, The Banjacks were on stage to liven up the festivities, and with their renditions of classic Christmas tunes, they had the crowd in the seasonal spirit of things very quickly! The musical entertainment continued with Georgia McCrory who impressed the crowd with her powerful voice, and Tullylagan Pipe Band piping and drumming a number of tunes, with a highlight being a haunting rendition of ‘Hallelujah’.

The cast of Stewartstown Amateur Dramatic Society also gave a sneak peek from their forthcoming pantomime ‘Pinocchio’ (playing in the Burnavon, Cookstown from Friday 5th – 27th January 2018).

The highlight of the evening and moment everyone was waiting for was the arrival of Santa himself, and the switch on of the renowned Christmas lights just after 6.30pm which was done with style and panache by Kate Grant.

Next weekend sees the turn of Maghera and Coalisland to switch on their lights (on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd December respectively). Visit www.midulstercouncil.org/Christmas  for more details on these events
