Chair Praises Cookstown Youth Project

06 December 2016

Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Councillor Trevor Wilson, has praised the success of a youth-focused community relations project in Cookstown.

The group of 34 young people from Catholic and Protestant communities within Cookstown District were targeted in May 2016 to participate in a Youth Unite Programme, after the Education Authority Youth Services (Cookstown) was successful in its application for the Executive Offices Funding, Together Building a United Community Summer Camps Programme (T:BUC).

Young people participated in a series of Pre-camp sessions (May – July 2016), a four day residential at Woodhall Outdoor Centre (July 2016) and post Camp sessions (September – December 2016).

Discussions took place around culture, identity, respect, symbols and building friendships.  Young people designed and created a mural with symbols that relate to them and their communities, but also added symbols that bring all young people together regardless of their culture or background.

The Youth Work team thanked all the young people who participated and everyone that came to the celebration event.  The Youth Unite mural is available to view at Cookstown Youth Centre.  For more information please contact staff at 028 8675 7168.
