Council Concerned At Timing Of NI Water Works In Dungannon

27 September 2016

Mid Ulster District Council is concerned at the timing of proposed works by NI Water in Dungannon town centre.

The Council, which is just about to finish its £4.5M public realm scheme in Dungannon, had asked for works to be deferred until after Christmas given the amount of construction which has already taken place in Dungannon since November last year.

While the 10 week-long programme to create a new foul sewer to service a housing project on Sloan Street will not impact on the improvement work undertaken as part of the public realm scheme, the Council feels the town centre would benefit from some respite from traffic diversions and disruption.

“Local businesses have been incredibly co-operative during the public realm work and now that the scheme is all but complete, have been looking forward to a period with no disruption, particularly as they begin to think about the peak shopping time associated with Christmas.

“The optimum time for NI Water to conduct this work was as part of the public realm scheme, but despite being notified along with all the utilities that it was taking place, we had no contact with them until late in our own contract period when it was too late to accommodate their work as part of our planned programme,” said Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Councillor Trevor Wilson.

This work will involve the laying of approximately 290m of new storm sewer within Barrack Street, Georges Street and Sloan Street, which will be completed in phases. The new storm sewer is being laid to serve the newly developed housing complex on Sloan Street, formally the bakery site. This work will also remove storm water from the combined sewers which will reduce the risk of out-of-sewer flooding and provide environmental improvements.

NI Water is holding an information event on its planned work on Tuesday 4 October between 4.30pm and 6.30pm in Ranfurly House Arts and Visitor Centre.
