Council Clarifies Position On Gritting Responsibilities

15 December 2017

Mid Ulster District Council has clarified that responsibility for the gritting of roads and footpaths lies with central and not local government.

The Council wishes to increase understanding of the role it plays in prolonged periods of snow and ice, where under an agreement with the Department for Infrastructure and on the Department’s request, council staff may assist with the treatment of footpaths in its five main towns.

This means that, when the agreement is triggered, the Council will treat the primary retail core of the town centres in Coalisland, Cookstown, Dungannon, Maghera and Magherafelt.

To view the maps of the core retail areas which may be treated in extreme snowfall or prolonged periods of ice, visit www.midulstercouncil.org/pavementgritting.
