Plans for the development of the Gortgonis site in Coalisland are to progress, following a meeting of Mid Ulster District Council’s Development Committee.
Currently home to a small leisure facility, which includes a gym, pitch and running track, the site has been earmarked by the Council for upgraded leisure provision and following the appointment of consultants, design proposals are to be created which will then form part of an extensive local consultation.
Subject to approvals, an area of land is also be leased to the Department of Education for a new Gaelscoil in the town, construction of which could begin in September next year.
While plans are still at an early stage, the Council recognises there is considerable interest in the plans and consultation with partners and user groups have already begun, including discussions with those groups which are currently using the existing building with regard to interim arrangements during any construction work.
The Council will also be working with the Woodland Trust to agree how any trees on the existing site, which may be affected by construction work, are to be replaced.
Consultation on proposals for the new development is likely to take place in spring 2018.
