Local Schools in Magherafelt Support UN International Day of Peace

28 September 2016

To help mark the UN International Day of Peace, 5000 young people from across Northern Ireland took part in the largest youth-led peace celebration held in Northern Ireland called ‘Amazing the Space’. The main event was held at the Eikon Exhibition Centre at the Maze and there were five other regional events held in Magherafelt, Ballymena, L’Derry, Enniskillen and Bessbrook.

‘Amazing The Space’ project was initiated by Dr. David Latimer from Derry First Presbyterian Church and was developed by a steering group of young people from across Northern Ireland and led by Co-operation Ireland.  The overall aim of the event was to promote the development of relationships between young people of different backgrounds across Northern Ireland and around the world.

St Mary’s College Magherafelt played host to the regional event on Wednesday 21st September, supported by Mid Ulster District Council.  Pupils from seven local schools attended including, St Pius College, St. Mary’s College, Magherafelt Primary School, Kilronan School, Gaelscoil, Holy Family Primary School and Spires Integrated Primary School. The local school children took part in various interactive exercises and were then presented with a live feed from the main event at the Maze.

The main event, which was entirely led by young people from design and branding concepts through to the selection of performances, showcased the talents and abilities of young people from across Northern Ireland. Those performing included Clodagh McCullough (14), a young singer from Magherafelt and pupil from Sperrin Integrated, Magherafelt. And introductory contributions were made by First Minister and Deputy First Minister.
