Mid Ulster Council Appoints New Chair

07 June 2016

Mid Ulster District Council has appointed a new Chair.

Councillor Trevor Wilson (UUP) took the position at the Council’s Annual General Meeting this evening (7 June).

Councillor Wilson has been an elected representative since 1989 and is also the group leader of the UUP on the Council. No stranger to the office, he held the Chairman’s position on the former Cookstown District Council, is Chairman of Cookstown Enterprise Centre and Chairman of the Mid Ulster Pipe Band Association.

In his spare time Trevor enjoys playing golf and is an avid supporter of Man United and the Northern Ireland football team.

He said:

“To be the first Unionist Chair of Mid Ulster is an honour and a privilege, and I intend to represent everyone in the district in my time in office.

“The Council has made great strides in its first year and there is more work to be done. I look forward to us all working together to make yet more progress and am committed in my year as Chair to working for the betterment of the entire Mid Ulster region”.

Councillor Sharon McAleer (SDLP) was appointed as the Deputy Chair.

First elected to the Council in May 2014, Councillor McAleer currently works in the community providing care to people with terminal illnesses.

As well as a particular interest in health and well-being issues, she is a keen runner, who runs twice a week with a local club, has completed numerous 10kms races, as well as 3 half marathons and who completed the Dublin marathon last year.

Speaking after her appointment, Councillor McAleer, said:

“I am honoured to have been appointed and to have this wonderful opportunity to meet and interact with people from across Mid Ulster”.

Both appointments are for one year.
