Two Mid Ulster District Council outdoor facilities are among the 60 green spaces in Northern Ireland to be awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award by Environmental Charity, Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful.
Dungannon Park and Maghera Walled Garden were awarded the Green Flag Award, which is supported by Heyn Environmental Solutions. The Green Flag is a prestigious award, setting an international benchmark standard for the management of parks and green spaces. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.
Dungannon Park and Maghera Walled Garden, both managed by the Council are proud to fly the Green Flag in recognition of the outstanding quality of their green space and the hard work and dedication required to achieve such an outstanding award.
Deputy Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Councillor Mark Glasgow, who attended the award ceremony said, “It is a great honour for the Council to be awarded not one, but two Green Flags for the outstanding Dungannon Park and Maghera Walled Garden. This remarkable achievement is testament to the hard work our staff put in to ensure that our high quality green spaces are as accessible, environmentally sustainable, and as pleasant to use as they possibly can be for members of the public.”
Dr Ian Humphreys, Chief Executive of Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful, said: "With many people increasingly relying on their local park as a place to exercise, relax and have fun, quality green space has never been more important.
"Research shows that people will only visit a park if they perceive it to be clean and safe; and the Green Flag Award is an easy way for the public to see at a glance that their park meets the highest standards.
"All the flags flying this year are a testament to the efforts of the hundreds of men and women, both staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award."
