This week sees the start of another European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR), 19th -27th November 2016, which aims to encourage householders, businesses, schools and organisations to take positive action on reducing their waste!
With the big theme right across Europe this year being Packaging Waste Reduction, Mid Ulster District Council will be getting on board and encouraging everyone to ‘Use Less Packaging’.
Packaging represents 25% of the weight of household waste, and a significant part of the volume of every households bin.
To get the ball rolling Mid Ulster District Council have pledged their support of the popular campaign with posting daily helpful tips on their ever increasingly popular Bin-ovation app.
The Chair of the Environment Committee at Mid Ulster District Council, Councillor Clement Cuthbertson, is supporting the campaign. He said, “I am delighted the Council is taking part in this year’s European Week for Waste Reduction. It is a great way to raise awareness of the need for improving the way we manage our waste”
“Although the use of packaging has its benefits the ‘over packaging’ of products is useless as it only adds to high resource consumption and environmental degradation. Packaging waste reduction can be easily combated if everyone took small efforts to contribute to the cause”
Councillor Cuthbertson concluded, “I would strongly encourage the public to purchase goods with less packaging, if possible, and to avoid individually wrapped items.”
This year’s theme is important as there are numerous steps every household can take to ensure they ‘Use Less Packaging’.
