Dog Licences

Click to License Online

Follow the steps below to license your dog online:

  • Click ‘License Online’ above, this will direct you to the Council Direct portal. You must first register your details with the portal and then use these details to login.
  • Once you have logged in, please choose ‘Dog Licensing’ under services available. This will direct you to the dog licensing page where you can choose to ‘Submit Licence Application’, ‘View Current Licences’ or ‘Cancel a Licence’.
  • To submit a dog licence application, please complete the four step process with the details required. Once complete, you will be asked to pay via a WorldPay secure payment webpage. Once payment has been made, your dog will be fully licensed.

Alternatively, you can call us on 03000 132 132 and apply for your licence over the phone, paying by credit or debit card if you pay a fee.

The fees for different types of licence are:

Type of Licence Fee
Assistance Dog Free
Over 65 (first dog) Free
Over 65 (subsequent dogs) £5.00
Concessionary rate (income support, housing benefit) £5.00
Neutered Dog £5.00
Normal Licence £12.50
Block Licence £32.00

Remember: even if you do not have to pay a fee for your licence, the law says you must still have a licence for your dog.

When you apply for your dog licence, you must also show that your dog has been microchipped. 'Microchipping' involves having an identification tag inserted painlessly into your dog, making the job of returning pets to their owners much easier should they stray or get lost.
