THE PIONEERS OF ENGINEERING IN TYRONE, a talk by Brendan Holland
Start Date: 13 April 2018
End Date: 13 April 2018
One of the questions I am often asked by customers from near and far is “Why are there so many engineering companies in Tyrone”? Well the answer can be found in the extraordinary drive, ingenuity and forward thinking of a group of innovators from the general Killeeshil-Clonaneese area. Until the early 1960s this had been a quiet rural community which has now been transformed into a thriving, enthusiastic, enterprise driven area with new companies springing up on an almost weekly basis, each fired by the example of these industrial pioneers. We will recognise and record the development of the engineering industry in our area and illustrate how this huge contributor to the local economy can be traced back to two local entrepreneurs, namely John Finlay and Peter Sylvester (or PS as he was locally known) Mallon. They are indeed the industrial godfathers of our area and we aim to pay tribute to their foresight, drive and initiative. Our ‘Company Family Tree’ will provide a lasting testament to the huge contribution these men made to improve the lives of countless people in the past half century.
