Local astro-photographer, Martin Campbell MSc., showcases his unique astro-images taken locally and abroad.
Martin is a member of the Irish Astronomical Association (I.A.A.) and has had a life-long love affair with the night sky. From a young age he developed a keen interest in astronomy, acquiring his first small-scale telescope at the age of nine. In his early career he was assistant director of the Armagh Planetarium and in 1978 went on to take up a teaching post in St. Patrick’s Academy, Dungannon, where he introduced astronomy as a G.C.S.E. subject. Later he was to establish an observatory at the school, making St. Patrick’s the only post primary school in Northern Ireland which has this facility.
Today, Martin travels to “dark sites” throughout Europe and beyond, to capture the night sky in all its glory. Many of the images captured have been published in astro periodicals, both in the U.K. and abroad. Some have also been awarded prizes in astro photographic competitions. eg. Astro-photographer of the Year, organised by the Greenwich Observatory of London.
Now, in retirement, Martin is able to devote more time to his hobby and continues to “capture the heavens”, using his telescopes and specialized camera equipment. He has his own purpose-built observatory located in the back garden, where he spends many happy hours!
