To complement our lecture on Seamus Heaney and the Polish Connection, Ad Hoc Theatre Company will present a poetry reading from the work of two contemporaries of Seamus Heaney and two fellow Nobel Laureates, the late Wislawa Szymborska, and Czesław Miłosz. Wislawa Szymborska won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1996.
Czesław Miłosz ranks among the most respected figures in 20th century Polish literature, and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1980. Both were friends of Seamus Heaney and the Irish poet wrote an obituary in The Guardian for Milosz following his death in 2004.
Actors from Ad Hoc Theatre Company will read the work of the Polish poets in their original language alongside their English translations. Formed in 1995 by a group of friends as an amateur company, Ad Hoc have been actively involved in staging plays and seasonal shows ever since from their base in Co Antrim.
