In this fascinating panel discussion, leading journalists discuss what journalism can learn about the ethical use of language through the poetry of Seamus Heaney. Olivia O’Leary is an Irish writer, journalist and current affairs presenter who has worked for RTE, Newsnight and Radio 4. She is currently presenter of The Poetry Programme on RTE Radio One. Malachi O’Doherty is a freelance writer and broadcaster based in Belfast and writes for the BBC, Belfast Telegraph and The Irish Times. Sean Hillen emigrated from Belfast to the US and worked at the United Nations Media Center in New York, and for American newspapers, before writing for publications such as The Irish Times, Time magazine and The Wall Street Journal. The panel, which will be chaired by Marie-Louise Muir, presenter of BBC Radio Ulster’s Arts Extra, will be joined by two Indiana University professors: Elaine Monaghan, who covered Northern Ireland for Reuters from 1997-99 and teaches journalism; and Winnifred Fallers Sullivan, a professor of religious studies and law for what promises to be a fascinating discussion.
