Business Improvement District (BIDs) Consultation
The Council is currently carrying out a Feasibility Study on the potential development of a Business Improvement District in the 5 town centres in Mid Ulster.
NI BIDS have been commissioned to undertake the work and are surveying businesses across each of the towns - Cookstown, Coalisland, Dungannon, Maghera and Magherafelt.
A Business Improvement District (BID) is a way of helping businesses take control of and improve their trading environment. It is an arrangement whereby businesses get together, decide what improvements they want to make in their town centre and how they will develop and manage these. This all goes into a business plan which is voted on and if the majority of businesses vote yes, all pay a small BID levy (1-2% of your business rates) for the implementation of the business plan. The BID lasts for a maximum of 5 years and must be able to demonstrate how it benefits the businesses that have funded it.
Northern Ireland already has 8 BIDs operating, from a small town such as Strabane to 3 across Belfast City Centre. For more information on BIDs and the work these areas are undertaking, please visit www.nibids.org.
If you operate a business in any of the town centres, we'd be grateful for your views on the potential of creating a BID. You can tell us what you think by completing the survey relevant to you.

**Businesses invited to attend BID workshops**
Local businesses are being invited to hear first-hand how a successful BID - Business Improvement District – works in a series of workshops.
The workshops form part of the feasibility study and will feature an independent trader who has been integral to the development and delivery of a successful BID elsewhere.
As well as learning about the benefits which traders have experienced from the introduction of a BID, businesses will also have the opportunity to hear how town centre branding can be used to connect with key audiences.
The BIDs workshops take place on:
- Tuesday 19 February, The Royal Hotel, Cookstown, 5:30pm
- Wednesday 20 February, The Terrace Hotel, Magherafelt, 8:30am
- Wednesday 20 February, Ranfurly House, Dungannon, 5:30pm.
