Following a two season closure for maintenance and repairs Maghera Leisure Centres new and improved football pitch has been officially opened.
The grass pitch which can be used by clubs throughout the district will benefit football and other sports in and around Maghera area.
On Tuesday 9th August Cllr Dominic Molloy, Chair of Mid Ulster District Councils Development Committee, officially declared the opening of the new and improved football pitch. After some words of thanks, players from Maghera Strollers and Derry City kicked off a friendly game to mark the opening of the pitch and the start of their soccer season.
Cllr Molloy said, “Upgrading and developing new grassroots facilities, such as this, is essential to increasing the number of people who have a chance to stay fit and healthy through participating in sport.” He said, “Mid Ulster District Council is dedicated to improving sports and leisure facilities across the district.”
The provision of top quality leisure and sports facilities supports the Council’s ongoing plan to promote sport, health and well-being in our community. This is reflected by our recent improvement schemes, offering upgraded sports facilities for hundreds of local people throughout the district.
According to Mr Molloy, “In addition to the pitch improvements here in Maghera the Council has spent almost £800,000 by substantially refurbishing sports facilities at Drumcoo Playing Fields in Dungannon, which were opened to the public last month.”
