Council staff get on their bikes for charity

07 December 2016
Staff at Dungannon Leisure Centre have been getting on their bikes, into the pool and on the treadmill to raise over £1,000 of vital funds for the Niamh Louise Foundation.
On this Friday and Saturday past (2nd and 3rd December) staff at the Mid Ulster District Council facility took part in two 24 hour challenges. Co-ordinated by Colin Arthurs, Patrick Lavery, Cathal Mc Veigh and Alanna Moore managed a mammoth 24 hour spinning session at reception, while Steven Mc Combe and Bronagh Swift completed the no mean feat of a 24 hour triathlon (swimming, spinning and treadmill running each for one hour continuously over the 24 hours).
The staff chose Niamh Louise Foundation as a cause close to their hearts due to the personal experience that some staff have had of friends and outer family affected by deaths by suicide, and given its local proximity.
The main aim of the Niamh Louise Foundation is to work with a range of voluntary and statutory agencies to reduce the numbers of people taking their own lives in Northern Ireland and in order to do this the charity provides suicide awareness, prevention, intervention and post intervention services to the community.
Local businesses joined the cause with Begley’s Sports Dungannon; Link NI; Mortgage Solutions Moy; Performance Nutrition; Andrews Ingredients, Lisburn; Newell Stores Dungannon and C R Print all donating £100 each.
It was a real team effort for all at the Leisure Centre with the participant’s colleagues volunteering in assisting with covering pool shifts throughout the night, and to supervise the event for first aid and support. Extra bikes at reception meant members of the public joined in to help support and donated throughout the event.
The staff at Dungannon Leisure Centre would like to take the opportunity to thank all of their colleagues, local businesses and members of the public who supported the fundraising efforts, which so far have raised over £1500.
If you are affected by any of the issues raised by this piece, the Niamh Louise Foundation can be contacted Monday to Friday 9.00am-5.00pm on 028 8775 3327, or 24/7 support is provided by Lifeline on 0808 808 8000.
