Mid Ulster: Highest Number Of Planning Applications Per Head Of Population

30 June 2016

Mid Ulster District Council received the highest number of planning applications per head of population of any council area in 2015-2016.

Figures for year, the first since planning functions transferred to local councils, show Mid Ulster was one of the top performing councils, making the second highest number of decisions (1,233) with only Belfast (1316) determining more, and with the joint highest approval rating at 96.7%.

While the total number of applications received across the eleven councils reduced by 5% on the previous year, Mid Ulster experienced a rise of 4%, and with 1,371 local applications received in the same period, Mid Ulster was the third highest, after Belfast City (1,557) and Newry, Mourne and Down (1,423).

Mid Ulster also received nearly double the applications of its neighbouring authority Antrim and Newtownabbey (722) and substantially more than neighbours in Mid and East Antrim (819), Derry and Strabane (897) and Fermanagh and Omagh (932).

Chair of the Council’s Planning Committee, Councillor Sean Clarke, said:

“These statistics for the new planning service in Mid Ulster are very encouraging and reflect a commitment to work with applicants and achieve positive outcomes which will benefit local people and contribute to sustainable growth in the region.

“When you also consider that this performance was being measured in the context of the service’s first year of operation, during a challenging period of change and without adequate resources transferring from central government, all credit is due to the staff who are in essence doing more with less”.

Other significant statistics related to the time taken to process local application with Mid Ulster taking of 15.2 weeks as compared to the 19.4 weeks average, and slightly above the 15 week target.

Mid Ulster was also one of the better performing councils when it came to meeting the enforcement case target of processing 70% of cases to conclusion within 39 weeks of complaint, exceeding the target with a 79% rate.
