Hill of The O’Neill and Ranfurly House are set to battle with three Goliaths of the tourism sector, as they go up against the National Trust’s Carrick-a-Rede, Titanic Belfast, and the Giant’s Causeway at this year’s Blue Insurance Northern Ireland Travel and Tourism Awards in the Slieve Donard Resort and Spa on Friday, October 21st.
All four attractions have been nominated for the Best Visitor Attraction category with Hill of The O’Neill and Ranfurly House being the only heritage attraction west of the Bann to be included in this category.
For the past 24 years, the prestigious awards ceremony has been attended by over 400 decision-makers from all sectors of the travel and tourism industry, while the awards themselves have become a coveted symbol of success among industry peers.
Chairman of Mid Ulster District Council, Councillor Trevor Wilson said, “We’re absolutely delighted that a jewel in the crown of Mid Ulster heritage, which offers a modern view from an ancient site, has been nominated for these prestigious awards. Our area has much to offer the culturally curious visitor and this nomination is testament to the importance and value of this site to the region’s tourism product.”
Mid Ulster District Council have recently extended facilities on the historical site with a brand new events space, conference facilities and a 360° panoramic viewing tower, which affords breath taking views of seven of all nine Ulster counties. Opened in 2016 as part of a £7 million project funded through the European Peace III Shared Spaces Programme, was delivered by Mid Ulster District Council and STEP in Dungannon. The exceptional new space developed is open to the public for hire to hold conferences, concerts, historical talks and events.
Ranfurly House, opened since 2012, includes a multi-media exhibition narrating the story of the Flight of the Earls and the Plantation of Ulster, a spacious Arts Studio, café and gift, craft and souvenir shop with maps, guidebooks and local historical information.
There will be 29 awards presented on the evening, which cover all sectors of the travel and tourism industry and are voted for by both the public and travel trade.
