Huge crowds wrapped up warm in Cookstown on Friday past (23rd), to kick off the Christmas Light Switch On celebrations in the Mid Ulster District Council area. Nearly three thousand people enjoyed the free family entertainment, Art Cart, Gaming bus, face painting and balloon modelling as well as a host of cartoon characters as they waited for Santa to arrive.
Local band, Crafty Crows were on stage to liven up the festivities, and with their renditions of classic Christmas tunes, they had the crowd in the seasonal spirit of things very quickly. The musical entertainment continued with Tullylagan Pipe Band piping and drumming a number of tunes, with a highlight being a haunting rendition of ‘Hallelujah’.
The cast of Stewartstown Amateur Dramatic Society also gave a sneak peek from their forthcoming pantomime ‘Alice in Wonderland’ (playing in the Burnavon, Cookstown from Friday 4th – 26th January 2019).
Followed by a magical street parade by Bardic Theatre’s Showstoppers, which made its way through the town performing musical hits from a family favourite movie.
The highlight of the evening and moment everyone was waiting for was the arrival of Santa Claus himself, and the switch on of the renowned Christmas lights with the Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Councillor Sean McPeake.
Next weekend sees the turn of Maghera and Coalisland to switch on their lights (on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd December respectively). Visit www.midulstercouncil.org/Christmas for more details on these events.
