Over 150 participants on the first Couch to 5K recently completed the nine week exercise programme, offered by Mid Ulster District Council and funded through the Northern Partnership for Physical Activity, across a number of its own Sports Arenas, and other community partner venues in Cookstown, Magherafelt and Draperstown.
Developed to ease beginners into a regime that took them from little or no running experience to being able to finish a 5 kilometre run in just nine weeks, the programme started with a mix of running and walking, gradually building up fitness and stamina slowly, therefore creating realistic expectations and making the challenge feel achievable from day one.
Speaking about the success achieved by the Couch to 5k programme participants, Councillor Trevor Wilson, Chair of Mid Ulster District Council said, “This challenge was for everyone, whether they’d never run before or if their aim was to get back into being more active.
“As a group training and exercise programme it provided the perfect opportunity to get fit and healthy in a welcoming and encouraging environment, which can be seen by the large numbers of people who not only joined but stuck at it over the nine weeks. Well done to all on this achievement!”
The Council has plans to run further Couch to 5k programmes in the new year and in the meantime, the weekly Parkrun at Mid Ulster Sports Arena can provide a way to keep up the good work!
