Protect Your Pooch!

Protect your pooch this Halloween by following some top tips to keep your pet calm among the loud bangs and bright flashes of fireworks.

  • Bring your dog inside so that the noise from fireworks doesn’t seem so loud.
  • Use the sound from your radio or TV to help drown out the sound of the fireworks.
  • Close your curtains or blinds to reduce the chances of your dog seeing flashes of light.
  • Make your dog a ‘den’ by putting out a blanket or box so it can feel safer by ‘hiding’.
  • Feed your dog well with a high-carbohydrate meal containing pasta or potato earlier in the evening which can help your pet rest and relax.
  • Try not to leave your dog alone in the house especially if it isn’t used to being inside. Your presence will provide reassurance.
  • Make sure you exercise and toilet your dog.
  • If your dog needs to go outside again later, ensure that it is kept on the lead, even if it does not appear stressed or frightened.  A sudden bang could cause your dog to bolt for safety.
  • And just in case, make sure your pet is wearing a collar and ID tag so it’s easier to reunite you!
  • Don’t walk your dog if fireworks are likely or let it outside on its own, and never punish your pet for being frightened of the noise.
