The lush green fields of Mid Ulster are home to some of the region’s best food producers and much of that home-grown produce makes its way to the plates of the area’s local eateries.
Start the day off with sumptuous breakfasts at one of the many bed and breakfasts in the area, where you’ll find a home from home. If you’re out and about, speak to your hosts as many establishments will offer a packed lunch to take along as you explore many of the gentler walking routes or more strenuous mountain hiking that the Sperrins and surrounds offer.
You’re spoilt for choice for brunches and lunches in the main town centres of Cookstown, Dungannon, Magherafelt, Maghera and Coalisland.
If there’s room after all that, the area has a wide variety of restaurants that cater for all tastes from the fine dining experience such as Viscounts, Dungannon, and Ardtara Country House to traditional family establishments like Friel’s, a fifth generation public house and soup kitchen in Swatragh, the Taphouse Bar and Restaurant in Bellaghy, neighbour to Seamus Heaney HomePlace, or The Valley Hotel, nestled in the heart of the Clogher Valley.
Get Hands On
If you want to get hands on, there are also a number of cookery schools offering one-to-one or group cooking lessons for all cooks from the novice to the more experienced chef. Wee Buns Cookery School and the Bakehouse in Bellaghy can teach you a thing or two about local traditional and modern cuisine!
