This year has been different to say the least, and due to restrictions in place, it’s going to be a virtually different Christmas than in years past. Here’s what we have planned to help everyone get in the spirit of the season, while ensuring all our residents remain safe and COVID-secure.
Lighting Up Mid Ulster
While our Christmas Lights Switch On events won’t go ahead in the same way, we all deserve a bit of sparkle right now, so from the end of November we’ll be putting up the trees and lighting up our towns as we have always done, to provide much needed festive cheer as you do your Christmas shopping!
This year you’ll be able to enjoy a film of the Christmas Lights being switched on by the Council Chair, Cllr. Cathal Mallaghan and of course, Santa himself, from the warmth and comfort of your own home on the Council’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram Channels.
We Love Local!
Throughout the year, we have been encouraging everyone to shop local and this time of the year, more than any other, gives us the opportunity to support local traders by shopping and spending locally. Research shows that for every £1 spent with a small or medium-sized business 63p stayed in the local economy. Our town centres and shops are operating safely and are ready to welcome you, so give our local traders the gift of your custom this Christmas and show them you love local!
Small Business Saturday is on 5 December 2020 this year and there’s no better day to show your love for our local independent retailers and hospitality businesses throughout the district. Small Business Saturday is a grassroots, non-commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to 'shop local' and support small businesses in their communities.
A Parking Present
We’re also giving you the gift of reduced parking charges in Dungannon and Magherafelt at all Council owned off-street car parks in both towns.
Parking in these car parks will be reduced to 10p for the first three hours in a special price promotion running in both towns from Saturday 21 November to Saturday 2 January. Off street car parking in Cookstown town centre is free of charge.
Our 12 Gifts of Christmas
This year sees our biggest Christmas giveaway yet with a district wide competition offering you the chance to win in the run up to the big day. Visit our Council Facebook page in December to enter our 12 Gifts of Christmas competition.
We’ve gone shopping in some of our local independent retail stores and gathered some amazing prizes to share. There’ll be daily prizes to be won from Saturday 5 December to Wednesday 16 December, with a bonanza final prize draw on Friday 18 December. Lucky winners will have something extra to put under the tree on Christmas Eve!
