‘Making Connections’ this Age Without Limits Action Day

To mark Age Without Limits Action Day, 20 March 2024, Mid Ulster District Council and Radius Housing are delivering a ‘one stop shop’ event providing information on a range of organisations to help over 50’s get, and stay, connected within their community.

The free drop-in event will take place on Wednesday, 20 March at the Burnavon, Cookstown from 10am-3pm.

The theme of this year’s action day is ‘See and be seen’ to help challenge the negative way ageing is represented in society.

Age Without Limits Action Day is a chance for everyone to do something to change the narrative about ageing. It’s an annual day for individuals and communities, workplaces, friends and families to learn, take action and improve lives.

Over 20 organisations will take part in the event to help encourage older people to reach out and connect, reduce social isolation and loneliness, and to support them to live long healthy lives. These include:

  • Mid Ulster Council Well-being team

  • Radius Housing

  • CDM Transport

  • Mid Ulster Agewell

  • Libraries NI

  • Women's Aid

  • O40 Cookstown

  • Mid Ulster Volunteer Centre

  • STEP

  • Chest Heart and Stroke

  • Alzheimer’s Society

  • Shop mobility

  • Marie Curie

  • Macmillan Community Palliative Care Service

Speaking ahead of the event, Chair of the Council, Councillor Dominic Molloy said,

Age Without Limits Action Day is all about challenging the often narrow, negative and stereotypical way that older people and ageing is portrayed in our society. Ageism is the prejudice that’s hidden in plain sight. It’s embedded in our society and even accepted as normal by those who are older. We see and hear ageism every day. This action day gives us the opportunity to recognise, take notice and change these biased habits. The range of valuable information available at the event will ensure no older person feels isolated, lonely or in need of help. I am delighted the Council is proactively supporting such an important initiative to help our older residents feel more valued and celebrated in our district.

Tea/coffee and light refreshments will be provided throughout the day. Transport options are available from Radius Housing. Contact Leanne on 07778 124217 or Caoimhe on 07570 076219 to find out more.
