Conservation Works Completed on Historic Towers

Major conservation works have been completed on the two historic towers at the Hill of The O’Neill in Dungannon. The project, which represents an investment of £115,000 by the Council, was carried out with the support and guidance of the Department for Communities’ Historic Environment Division (DfC HED).

In the eighteenth century, a prosperous businessman, Thomas Knox Hannington, built himself a grand house on the site. The towers, all that remains of the building are recognised as listed historical monuments of significant cultural and architectural importance. In recent weeks, they have undergone carefully planned restoration designed to protect their structural integrity and ensure their long-term preservation.

The conservation works included replacement of the roof of the East Tower, re-pointing of the masonry and the installation of cantilever supports in both towers to stabilise and protect vulnerable stonework. All interventions were carried out using sensitive, heritage-appropriate methods to maintain the authenticity and historic character of the structures.

The completion of the works marks an important milestone in the ongoing stewardship of the Hill of The O’Neill site by Mid Ulster District Council, enhancing its safety, stability, and visitor experience while safeguarding its architectural legacy.
