First Management Plan Launched for Sperrin AONB
The Sperrins Partnership, working in collaboration with local councils and the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA), has announced the launch of the first Sperrin Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Management Plan 2026–2036 and accompanying Action Plan 2026–2031.
Designated in 1968, the Sperrin AONB is one of eight Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Northern Ireland. Despite its designation almost 60 years ago, it is the only AONB in the region that has not previously benefited from a dedicated management plan. The launch therefore marks a significant milestone for the area and establishes, for the first time, a coordinated approach to landscape management, conservation and sustainable development.
Development of the plans was funded by DAERA through the Environment Fund Strategic Strand 2023 -2028 and informed by an extensive 18-month consultation process involving local communities, voluntary organisations, businesses, landowners, local councils, and statutory agencies and departments.
The landmark Sperrin Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Management Plan 2026–2036 provides a shared vision and framework to protect, enhance and promote one of Northern Ireland’s most treasured landscapes over the next decade, while supporting local communities, businesses and visitors to play an active role in its future.
The Management Plan sets out a long-term vision, mission and priorities for the Sperrins, with a focus on:
-
Safeguarding and enhancing the area's unique natural, built and cultural heritage
-
Supporting nature recovery and biodiversity across the landscape
-
Encouraging meaningful community involvement and engagement
-
Promoting sustainable enjoyment of the area for residents and visitors
-
Strengthening partnership working to deliver positive environmental, social and economic outcomes
The Management Plan and Action Plan will be monitored and reported on throughout their delivery to ensure transparency and accountability. The plans are intended to serve as a practical guide for residents, businesses, community groups and visitors, highlighting how everyone can contribute to safeguarding the special qualities of the Sperrins. The Sperrins Partnership is committed to maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders across the region and ensuring local voices remain central to the delivery of the plans.
The plan also recognises that the Sperrins face a range of challenges, including environmental pressures, changing land use demands and the need to secure investment to deliver future projects. Through strong partnership working and ongoing engagement, The Sperrins Partnership aims to attract additional funding and support to implement priority actions over the coming years.
Minister for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs Andrew Muir MLA said:
"My department is proud to support the development and delivery of the first-ever Management Plan for the Sperrin Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty through the Environment Fund Strategic Strand 2023 -2028 and associated Carrier Bag Levy Funding. The plan provides a clear framework for conserving and enhancing this nationally important landscape while supporting thriving communities and sustainable economic opportunities. It reflects the value of collaboration and shared responsibility, and we look forward to working with partners and local communities to help deliver its ambitions and ensure the Sperrins continue to be enjoyed by future generations."
Cllr Sean Clarke, Chair of the Sperrins Partnership, added:
"The launch of the first Sperrin AONB Management Plan is a major milestone for this special landscape and the communities who call it home. Developed through extensive consultation and collaboration, the plan provides a shared vision for protecting and enhancing the Sperrins while creating opportunities for people to benefit from and enjoy the area sustainably. This is a partnership-led plan, and its success will depend on continued collaboration with local communities, businesses, landowners, voluntary organisations and statutory partners. We encourage everyone with an interest in the Sperrins to engage with the plan and play a part in shaping its future."
