Progress at Gortgonis as Plans Move Forward

Residents, sports clubs and community users are being advised of a number of temporary arrangements at Gortgonis as significant progress continues on the delivery of the new school development and future recreation centre project.

From the end of June, the existing car park and part of the track area will close to facilitate works associated with the new school development, with construction of the school building due to commence in July.

To support continued use of the site, Council has put arrangements in place to keep the track open throughout the summer period. While a full 400m circuit will not be available, minor works will allow continued access and use of the facility during this phase.

The overall project represents a major investment in the future of Gortgonis and Coalisland, delivering improved educational, sporting and community facilities for generations to come.

During the construction period, users are encouraged to utilise alternative town centre car parks and access the site via the canal path where appropriate. Residents are also advised that road works associated with the new school development will commence in the coming months and may require temporary traffic management measures, including potential road closures.

As part of the works, existing street and track lighting within the affected area will be disconnected. In addition, survey works associated with the next phase of the recreation centre development may require short temporary site closures.

Council remains committed to keeping residents, clubs and site users informed throughout the project and will provide regular updates as works progress.

Construction of the new recreation centre is currently anticipated to commence in early 2027, with an estimated build programme of approximately 15 months.
