Health and Safety

Environmental Health provides advice to businesses, employees and members of the public by signposting health and safety information and guidance. We enforce health and safety law through the inspection of workplaces and the investigation of accidents and complaints.

Local Councils and the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) are responsible for health and safety in different sectors, with Councils having responsibility for:

  • Service sector businesses (hairdressers, beauticians, tattooists, undertakers etc.)

  • Offices, retail and wholesale outlets, restaurants

  • Places of entertainment and recreation facilities

  • Residential homes.

Businesses are routinely inspected, without prior notice to check standards and assess the approach to managing health, with the opportunity to discuss any areas of concern and to provide guidance and information to help businesses comply with the law.

Complaints and accidents will be investigated, and where necessary Improvement and Prohibition Notices will be issued. Or in certain cases, offenders will be prosecuted in line with the Council’s enforcement policy.
