Council Consults on Equality Scheme

Mid Ulster District Council is consulting on its revised plans for equality. This includes an updated Equality Scheme and the associated action plans for equality and disability.

The plans have been developed in order to promote equality of opportunity and positive attitudes towards section 75 groups. This includes encouraging participation in public life by disabled people. The consultation period will commence on 2 November 2020 for a 13 week period until 29 January 2021, extended by one week in order to facilitate the Christmas holiday period.

The overarching guidance for implementation of the Council’s Section 75 duties is derived from the Council’s draft updated Equality Scheme for 2021-2026. The Equality Scheme provides specific actions in relation to assessing if there are any adverse impacts in relation to the nine protected groups, which are: people of different religious beliefs, political opinion, racial group, age, marital status or sexual orientation, men and women generally, people with or without a disability, and people with or without dependants. There is also a strong focus in relation to the opportunities to better promote equality of opportunity and good relations.
The Disability Action Plan sets out Council’s commitment to improving the quality of life for all people who have disabilities who live, work in or visit Mid Ulster. The Equality Action plan reflects the outcomes of an Audit of Inequalities carried out to reflect aspects of need within the district. The Equality Action plan sets out how these needs will be addressed in the next few years.

Consultation responses can be submitted online. Versions of the plan in alternative formats will also be made available upon request.

Commenting on the consultation process, Chair of the Council’s Policy and Resources Committee, Councillor Malachy Quinn explained,

This consultation process provides the opportunity for not only groups affected by our work but also individuals who would like to have their say on what we are planning to implement over the next few years. The plans will be made available online, in hard copy and in alternative formats for anyone who requires it.

The draft action plans can be accessed on the Council’s website. Hard copies or alternative formats can be made available by emailing Ann McAleer, Corporate Policy & Equality Officer on ann.mcaleer@midulstercouncil.org or via telephone on 03000 132 132 (Ex 24612). The closing date for this consultation process is Friday 29 January 2021.
