Irish Language Bursary Fund Now Open

Would you like to improve your language skills in an immersive way? Mid Ulster District Council has opened its latest round of Irish Language bursary funding to help you do just that.

Launching the scheme, Council Deputy Chair Councillor Christine McFlynn said,

“When it comes to learning a new language, it’s often most effective when you can really immerse yourself in the spoken and written word. Spending time where the language is spoken has been shown to be one of the best ways to learn a language in the most natural way possible.

Our bursary funding will allow students to apply for Gaeltacht study trips, where they will be able to interact with native speakers and develop their proficiency by adding new vocabulary and contexts to their understand, which they can then apply when they return home.”

The Council provides bursaries to individuals to undertake language courses in recognised Gaeltacht colleges. To be eligible the individual must be resident in the Mid Ulster District Council area.

Gaeltacht study visits provide attendees with an opportunity to immerse themselves in an Irish speaking community and increase their knowledge and use of Irish through attending classes, whilst taking part in a wide range of cultural activities through the medium of Irish.

The Gaeltacht Bursary Scheme is open to all students and adult learners resident in Mid Ulster.

The scheme will close on the 29th April 2022 and successful applicants will be notified by the end of May 2022. Applications can be made online at, or by contacting the Council’s Irish Language Officers directly on 03000 132 132 to request a paper copy.

In addition, groups and organisations can currently submit expressions of interest for activity funding (such as classes, courses or workshops). If you would like to submit an expression of interest for activity funding, you can do so up until 4pm, Friday 24 June 2022.
