Mid Ulster District Council helps people Keep Warm this winter

Mid Ulster District Council, in conjunction with the Public Health Agency, will be providing local organisations with Keep Warm Packs to distribute to those most in need in the community to help them stay warm this winter.

The packs will include warm undergarment and outerwear clothing including: socks, a vest, a scarf, gloves and a blanket.

Cold homes have a significant impact on people's health. One of the best ways to stay well in the winter is to keep warm. This can be increasingly difficult these days with the cost of fuel and the cold weather.

Some groups, such as older people, very young children, and people with serious medical conditions are particularly vulnerable to the effects of cold weather.

There are some practical steps that you can take to help keep warm and healthy throughout the winter months.

Heat your home to a comfortable temperature -By setting your heating to the right temperature (18-21oC), you can keep warm and keep your bills low.

Get up to date information- there are a range of grants, benefits and sources of advice available to make your home more energy efficient.

Eat well- food is a vital source of energy which helps to keep your body warm. Try to eat at least one hot meal a day and have hot drinks throughout the day and one before bedtime.

Stay active- Sitting still for long periods of time may make you feel cooler. Any activity, such as household chores or even chair exercises, gets the circulation going and will warm you up.

Wear warm clothes- wrap up warm inside and outside the home. Wear lots of thin layers-clothes made from cotton, wool or fleecy synthetic are good and help maintain body heat.

Remember to close curtains and shut doors to keep heat in the rooms you use most often.
