Mid Ulster District Council has paid tribute to Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland football fans.
Chair of the Council, Councillor Trevor Wilson, was speaking on his return from the Euros and on the day that Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris, announced fans from Northern Ireland and the Republic were to receive the ‘Grand Vermeil’, the city’s most prestigious award.
“I was lucky enough to be in France for the Euros, to see Northern Ireland play and to experience first hand the good humour, good natured banter and exceptional behaviour of all the fans. The supporters from both teams have been incredible ambassadors and have been so well-received by the French people and the French press, that there can be no better tourism advert for Northern Ireland and the Republic. The whole Northern Ireland team played exceptionally well with four players in the squad from the Mid Ulster area and coming from Cookstown I was particularly pleased to watch great performances from Aaron Hughes and Stuart Dallas”.
