Mid Ulster’s Environmental Education for Schools Continues

22 September 2016

This new school year marks the second year of Mid Ulster District Council’s environmental programme for schools being delivered across the district.

The programme brings together different elements of education work, meaning that schools across the region can tap into a variety of activities, ranging from free talks, presentations and visits to resources like battery recycling boxes, composters, mobile recycling trailer, carnival games and an education vehicle.

Launching this year’s programme during a visit to Kilronan School, Magherafelt, Chair of the Council, Councillor Trevor Wilson, said:

“We are very fortunate to have a dedicated team of staff whose focus is on raising awareness of environmental issues and actively promoting the benefits of recycling and utilising our brown and blue bins more effectively.

"Any steps we can take to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill are definitely worth educating our residents on. Incorporating an environmental programme into school curriculums teaches our children the important lesson of recycling from an early age which is extremely beneficial.”

Chair of the Council’s Environment Committee, Councillor Clement Cuthbertson, also welcomed the new programme:

“Children are great environmental ambassadors and some of the keenest recyclers you’ll ever meet! They not only use their knowledge at school, but take it home to family and friends to influence behaviours outside the classroom.

"The programme proved very successful last year and I look forward to seeing it rolled out in our schools for many years to come.”

Mrs Alison Millar, Principle of Kilronan School said, “Kilronan are delighted to once again be part of this excellent programme. The activities provided really enhance pupil learning and everyone has lots of fun!”
