Mid Ulster District Council’s sports and leisure services team are excited to offer the popular ‘Couch to 5k’ exercise programme, developed to ease beginners into a regime that takes them from little or no running experience to being able to finish a 5 kilometre run in just nine weeks.
The programme starts with a mix of running and walking, gradually building up fitness and stamina slowly, therefore creating realistic expectations and making the challenge feel achievable from day one.
Starting on 26th September the Couch to 5K challenge will meet at various venues district wide and participants can come to one or as many sessions as they can make during the week at a cost of £1 per session. Participating venues include:
- Cookstown High School – every Tuesday from 8-9pm
- Mid Ulster Sports Arena, Cookstown – every Thursday from 7.45-8.45pm
- Meadowbank Magherafelt – every Monday from 6:45 -7.45pm & Fridays 6.30-7.30pm
- Backrow Recreation Centre 3G, Draperstown - every Tuesday 6-7pm & Fridays 8-9pm.
A number of coaches will lead the sessions and will also be available to advise, help and encourage participants during the nine week programme.
Speaking about the new Couch to 5k programme, Councillor Dominic Molloy, Chair Development Committee said, “This challenge is for everyone, whether you’ve never run before or if you want to get back into being more active. As a group training and exercise programme it provides the perfect opportunity to get fit and healthy in a welcoming and encouraging environment”.
