Over 10 local sports teams and individuals were honoured by Mid Ulster District Council at a Civic Awards evening last Friday (15 April).
Hosted by Chair of the Council, Councillor Linda Dillon, the event held in Burnavon, Cookstown, recognised an impressive array of sporting achievement in Mid Ulster.
Sports clubs which were acknowledged on the night included Cookstown Bowling Club, winners of the Irish Junior Cup, Bancran Tug of War Team which took the top spots at UK and European Championships, Cookstown Rugby Club who were crowned Ravenhill Cup Winners 2015 and Cookstown Primary School’s boys Hockey team who brought home the Pearson Cup for the first time since 2005.
Individuals recognised on the night included members from Cookstown Boxing club Ethan McGuckin and Francis Quinn who took home a Silver and Bronze medal from the European Schoolboy Championships in Russia and another boxer, Cara McLaughlin, All Ireland Featherweight Champion.
Clogher Valley’s Lucy Somerville was recognised for her success in Ulster Rugby’s Under 18s, as were Linda Black Ulster Hockey’s Personality of the Year for Women and, swimmer, Lukasz Kowalczyk who reached the Scottish Coast from Donaghadee after 12 hours of continuous swimming.
Cyclists, Stephen Hutchinson, John Dempsey, Andrew Reid and John McGlaughlin, who recorded the fastest time at the Ulster 25 Miles Trial Championship to win the Ulster Senior Men’s Gold Medal also received awards
Speaking at the event, Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Councillor Linda Dillon commented:
“We have so much sporting achievement in Mid Ulster, I feel it is essential that we acknowledge and reward their talents. I’m delighted to be part of each and every event which celebrates this kind of success and I have no doubt I’ll be hearing some of these names and seeing many of these faces again.”
A further two civic awards evenings will also be held.
