Gaeilge sa Bhaile / Irish in the Home – an exciting new programme for parents!

19 February 2016

Mid Ulster District Council has part funded the production of an Irish language resource pack entitled Gaeilge sa Bhaile (Irish in the home) to support families who have chosen Irish medium education for their children.

The pack, published by Conradh na Gaeilge Charn Tóchair (CNaGCT), is an invaluable resource consisting of nine books and a CD developed by Áine Andrews during her time as Principal at Gaelscoil na bhFál, Belfast.

The pack is specifically designed to provide parents with the opportunity to participate in their child’s development through Irish outside of the school environment.

The books cover simple phrases that parents / carers can use with children in the home and are suitable for children at the Naíscoil and / or in Rang 1, Rang 2 age range.

A pilot programme, which included four workshops for parents, was carried out at An Carn, Maghera to ensure the resource was user friendly and accessible.

Following positive feedback from the pilot, CNaGCT will be working with Gaelscoileanna to run the programme throughout the Mid Ulster Council area.

Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Councillor Linda Dillon, is very enthusiastic about the roll out of the programme and the publication of the Gaeilge sa Bhaile resource pack.

“I am absolutely thrilled at the production of such a useful, accessible and necessary resource. With the popularity of Irish medium schools completely soaring, it is a very timely tool that will benefit parents of children at these particular schools greatly by enabling them to interact and communicate with them more confidently and comfortably!

“Whilst I have a small amount of Irish, my daughter is in Rang 3 in a local Gaelscoil and this pack is certainly a very useful resource in enabling me to be proactive in my child's education.”
