Bag Yourself Some Free Compost!

28 April 2017

Local residents can bag themselves free compost from 8 – 13 May courtesy of Mid Ulster District Council!

The giveaway is part of Compost Awareness Week and the free compost – which all comes from food recycling in Mid Ulster – will be available from the Council’s three main recycling centres.

From Monday 8 May compost will be available at the Cookstown, Dungannon and Magherafelt Recycling Centres. Bagged compost will be available at all three centres and loose compost will also be available at the Magherafelt centre.

One bag is available per household at each centre or one small trailer load per household at Magherafelt.

The incentive comes as part of the Council’s current Food Waste Recycling Campaign where it is urging residents to Recycle to the Max and dispose of food waste properly in the brown bin.

Waste disposed of in our kitchen caddies and brown bins is collected by the Council and taken to a central high tech composting plant where it is converted into a high quality approved compost.

Converting our food waste to compost reduces the amount we send to landfill which in turn helps the environment and saves money.

Last year Mid Ulster district Council sent around 15,000 tonnes of biodegradable waste (including lots of food waste) to landfill at a cost of almost £2M! This sum could have been reduced if we all used our brown bins ‘to the max’.

Food waste sent to landfill doesn’t harmlessly break down. It has a big impact on the environment as it rots and releases methane- a harmful greenhouse gas that is 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Councillor Trevor Wilson, commented, “Tackling the issue of food waste is one of the Council’s strategic priorities so highlighting one of the links between food waste and the end product is a great way of demonstrating its value. The giveaway is also a little reward for those who make a constant effort to use their bins properly. The more food waste we dispose of correctly in our brown bin, the less goes to landfill and can instead be converted into this high quality compost.

“This, along with the free recycling packs being delivered to every house in the district and the new food waste messaging on vehicles, emphasises the Council’s commitment to the cause and is a fantastic start in our fight against food waste!”

A limited supply of the compost is available and will be distributed on a first come, first come basis so you better be quick!

Opening hours for the three recycling centres are: Cookstown- Monday-Friday 8am – 8.30pm, Saturday 9.30am – 7pm, Dungannon – Monday 8.30am - 5.30pm, Tuesday - Friday 8.30am – 7.30pm, Saturday 8.30am – 5.30pm and Magherafelt – Monday/Wednesday/Friday and Saturday 8.30am – 5.30pm, Tuesday and Thursday 8.30am – 7.30pm.
