Council Consults on Equality and Disability Action Plans

23 June 2017

Mid Ulster District Council has begun to consult on its new action plans for equality and disability.

The plans, which set out how the Council will promote equality of opportunity and positive attitudes towards disabled people, including encouraging participation in public life by disabled people, detail the specific actions which the Council will take to meet its legislative duties.

The Equality Action Plan reflects the outcomes of an Audit of Inequalities which identified the different needs of the nine protected equality groups - persons of different religious beliefs, political opinion, racial group, age, marital status or sexual orientation, men and women generally, persons with disability and persons without and persons with dependants and persons without – and shows how the needs will be addressed in the next number of years.

Improving the quality of life for all people who have disabilities who live, work in or visit Mid Ulster, including encouraging the participation in public life of disabled people, forms the focus of the revised Disability Action Plan.

Commenting of the consultation, Chair of the Council, Councillor Kim Ashton, said:

“This consultation process provides the opportunity for everyone to feedback their views on the Council’s plans for equality and disability over the next few years and so it’s important that we make the process as accessible as possible.

“All the information is online, as well as being available in hard copy and in alternative formats for anyone who requires it, and we will also be holding consultation workshops to ensure that there are as many ways as possible for affected groups and individual members of the community to have their say”.

The draft action plans can be accessed by clicking here. Hard copies or alternative formats can be made available on request by emailing Ann McAleer, Corporate Policy & Equality Officer at ann.mcaleer@midulstercouncil.org  or via telephone on 03000 132 132 (ext 24612). Three consultation events will also be held in the Council Offices in Cookstown, Dungannon and Magherafelt in September.

The closing date for comments on both action plans is 29 September 2017.
