Cookstown’s Magical Mile Lights up for Christmas

10 November 2017

In two weeks time Christmas in Cookstown gets officially underway as a mile of magical Christmas lights will be switched on to illuminate the town centre, and the festive countdown begins! Next Friday 24th November, the streets will come alive in what has to be one of the most spectacular Christmas lights displays in the country.

Starting at 5.30pm on William Street and in the build-up to the switch-on, there will be loads to keep everyone amused - street stalls, free face painting and a host of Christmas and Cartoon characters providing on-street entertainment for the little ones.

You can also look forward to street performances from a fire juggler and a fire hula-hooper, stilt walkers and walkabouts. The corner of the Burn Road and William Street junction will feature amazing ice-sculptures, presenting the perfect opportunity for family photos.

A big screen will be in place with live streamed footage from the stage so that you won’t miss any of the special moments as the entertainment plays out over the evening. Opening with local band, The Banjacks on stage from 5.30pm, bringing their own unique blend and twist to some of your favourite songs, also appearing will be the cast of Stewartstown Amateur Dramatic Society with numbers from their forthcoming pantomime Pinocchio (playing in the Burnavon, Cookstown from Friday 5th – 27th January 2018), and the award winning Tullylagan Pipe Band, established in 1923 and currently one of the most respected and well-known bands on the circuit.

Of course the highlight of the evening will be the arrival of Santa himself, this year aboard a very special mode of transport, which is being kept top secret for now! You will just have to come along to see what happens for yourself!

Deputy Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Councillor Mark Glasgow is looking forward to the impressive sight of this year’s magical mile of Christmas Lights saying, “There is no better way to kick off Mid Ulster’s festive celebrations by switching on Cookstown’s world famous lights. It’s a highlight of the year and people far and wide have admired the sight, encouraging local, national and international visitors to the town. It’s the perfect way to illuminate all that Cookstown Town Centre has to offer.”

Santa will appear on stage just after 6.30pm and will press the magic red button and the town will light up in its stunning Christmas display.

Mid Ulster District Council would like to remind motorists that road diversions will be in place from 4.30pm in Cookstown Town Centre and William Street will be closed to through traffic on Friday 24th November from 5pm, re-opening at 8pm.
