Irish Language Diploma goes from strength to strength in Cookstown!

13 September 2017

Applications are now open for the new term of the Irish Language Diploma course.

This two-year (part-time) course, delivered by Ulster University and supported by the Council, runs for three months in the autumn and three months in the spring. Classes are taught on Monday evenings, from 6pm-9pm, in The Burnavon and Southwest College.

Students are instructed in listening, speaking, reading and writing and many diploma graduates progress to the degree course in Irish Language and Literature.

Mid Ulster District Council recently hosted a celebratory event in the Burnavon Cookstown to mark the achievements of past and present diploma students.

Speaking at the event, Councillor Dominic Molloy said: “Here in Mid Ulster we are extremely proud of our involvement with the University of Ulster in the provision of this excellent diploma course. Running weekly for the last five years, the Irish Language Diploma has seen over 80 successful graduates with 29 Diploma recipients this year alone. Educationally we are now supporting language learners from nursery school right through to university and this is a key factor in the renewed vibrancy of the language in our area.

“I would like to thank the senior members of Ulster University and Ulster GAA who attended our celebration event in recognition of the importance of this course.”

Dr Malachy Ó Néill, Head of School of Irish Language and Literature at Ulster University highlighted the continued success of the Diploma Course: “The Irish Diploma at Ulster University continues to be a fantastic pathway to a high level of proficiency in Irish and the support of Mid Ulster District Council enables students locally to access this more readily, opening the door to third-level education for many.”
