Ballyronan Marina on Lough Neagh has once again received a coveted Blue Flag award for its outstanding facilities and environmental management at this year’s Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful Awards. The latest award marks the tenth in a row for the marina which first picked up the title a decade ago.
Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful announced the Blue Flag status for Ballyronan Marina at their annual beach and marina awards last week. The Blue Flag award is certified by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and has 45 participating countries. In 2019, Blue Flags have been awarded to 4,560 beaches, marinas and boats worldwide. Beach and marina operators receiving a Blue Flag are demonstrating their commitment to protecting the coastal environment, excellent water quality, safety, and providing access for all. Fun educational activities are also available at these sites.
Receiving the award on behalf of Mid Ulster District Council, Chair Councillor Martin Kearney said, “To receive this award not just once but an uninterrupted ten times in a row is a wonderful achievement not only for the marina itself and the staff who work there, but for the community on the lough shore, and in fact the district as a whole.”
“As a Council at the heart of our community, we work together with individuals, community groups, schools and the voluntary sector across the year to achieve and maintain those standards. Mid Ulster has an environment which deserves to be protected, preserved and enhanced for the enjoyment of everyone and awards like the Blue Flag indicate we continue to do our jobs as custodians of the Marina and its environs for our future generations.”
Ian Humphreys, Chief Executive of Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful, speaking at the Blue Flag awards said “For your health, for good old fashioned ‘screen free’ fun and for helping us realise the wonder of our natural environment, it is hard to beat a visit to our coast or lough shores. Behind every enjoyable experience is a small team of committed beach and marina operators who toil year round to keep these places in pristine condition. These awards are one way of recognising their ongoing dedication and of course advertising the best very places to take a holiday.”
